Nine. That's the number of games that Chris Sale has played for the Boston Red Sox since the beginning of the 2020 MLB season. The seven-time All-Star has yet to make his 2022 debut due to a rib injury, but his rehab stint has him on the right track to his return.
Sale made his second Florida Complex League rehab start on Saturday morning and looked fantastic. Though he only went 2.2 innings, the southpaw didn't allow a run on three hits, striking out six batters while hitting one.
Chris Sale Injury Update
Red Sox fans are likely thrilled by Sale's second FCL game. His first one wasn't anything special, giving up a run, hit and walk over just one inning of action. Taking into account that he almost tripled his time on the mound on Saturday, things are heading in the right direction.
There still isn't an indication on an exact date as to when the Red Sox expect Sale to rejoin the team. The plan is for them to slowly ramp up his rehab with each passing appearance until they're comfortable that he can handle a full starter's load.
Sale hasn't looked like his dominant self since his last All-Star campaign during the 2018 MLB season. He's gone 11-12 in 34 starts since the beginning of 2019, pitching to a 4.12 ERA and 1.140 WHIP, both worse than his career averages of 3.03 and 1.042, respectively.
The hope is that this latest rehab stint will firmly put Sale's injury woes behind him for good and return to his Cy Young finalist form. The Red Sox already own the fourth-best ERA (3.58) in the American League and adding a healthy Sale to the mix should make the pitching staff even more dangerous.
