Chase Edmonds returned in Week 15 after a four-game absence due to an ankle injury. Backfield mate James Conner ended up out-touching and out-snapping Edmonds in his first game back.

This split among the Cardinals' RBs dims Edmonds' fantasy outlook heading into Week 16.

Chase Edmonds Fantasy Outlook

Conner didn't operate as the workhorse he had been with Edmonds sidelined, but he did have the clear edge in the backfield.

Conner handled 8 of the 15 rushing attempts (53.3%) given to Cardinals backs against the Detroit Lions, compared to just 6 rushes for Edmonds. It's possible Arizona was easing Edmonds back in, and the game script forced them to abandon the run game anyways.

Yet, it was Conner who featured in the air attack, hauling in both of his 2 targets for 31 yards. Edmonds went catchless on 1 target. Conner also out-snapped Edmonds on offense, 44% to 39%.

The presence of both RBs will prevent the other from a full load of work as long as both remain healthy. The early returns, though, suggest that Conner is No. 1 back given usage as a dual-threat out of the backfield.

It's hard to see Edmonds fully returning to the 14.0 opportunities (9.4 rushes plus 4.6 targets) he averaged over the first eight games of the year before his injury.

Conner was relegated to a run-heavy workload to begin the year, but the 5.2 targets and 4.8 receptions he averaged in five games with Edmonds limited or out presents a real threat to siphon away receiving work down the stretch.

Conner appears to have a slight advanatge heading into a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, who allow the third-fewest PPR points to RB this season. The split and tough opponent could reduce these backs to mere FLEX plays in Week 16.
