The San Francisco 49ers are just two seasons removed from a Super Bowl appearance and will be looking to return to the promised land in 2021. They are coming off a 6-10 season and are still trying to figure out whether starter Jimmy Garoppolo is their quarterback of the future or not.

With backup options Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard both hitting free agency, the 49ers are in search of a new signal caller to sit behind Garoppolo on the depth chart. The Red Rifle could be heading to San Francisco as it looks like one of the team's top targets is veteran Andy Dalton.

Dalton now has 10 NFL seasons under his belt and led the Dallas Cowboys to a 4-5 record after stepping in due to starter Dak Prescott's leg injury. He averaged just 197.3 passing yards per game, but threw 14 touchdowns passes to 8 interceptions.

It's important for San Francisco to sign a quarterback they feel confident about subbing in if needed due to Garropolo's inconsistency. He has played only one full season since entering the NFL in 2014 and started 6 games in 2020 before suffering a high-ankle sprain.

49ers fans should feel comfortable that Garoppolo is on pace to be fully healthy and ready to enter training camp as the team's leader on offense. Grabbing Dalton here is simply an insurance policy and it is a smart one as he is one of the best quarterbacks left on the market.
