The Chicago Cubs surprised a lot of people when they didn't complete a trade involving catcher Willson Contreras at this year's MLB deadline. The All-Star enters free agency following the 2022 season, but his latest quote will make Cubs fans excited on a potential future with the organization.

Conteras rolled his ankle during the Field of Dreams game on August 11 and it looked like something that could cost him some time. Instead, he only experienced some general soreness and even blasted a home run two days later. His willingness to play through some pain is notable here.
Many times, a player seemingly ready to enter free agency will take it easy if any sort of injury were to occur. That's because risking further damage could hurt their chances of cashing in on a big deal. Contreras isn't worried about that, though, because he enjoys what's happening in Chicago right now.
"It’s not like there’s nothing that I want to be part of. I want to be part of what’s going on here because in the second half we’ve been playing really good baseball.”- Willson Contreras on the Cubs
The Cubs have gone 17-11 since returning from the All-Star break and continue to sell out Wrigley Field on a nightly basis. Contreras credits his younger teammates for a lot of that success, explaining how they come into the dugout willing to learn. He's been able to act as a mentor for those guys.
The door is much more open for Contreras to re-sign with Chicago in the offseason than people originally believed it to be. He sees this team heading in the right direction and doesn't want to miss out.
