The Masters and Augusta National are cloaked in tradition. There's a reason the unofficial catchphrase of the tournament has become "a tradition unlike any other." One of the best traditions is Augusta National legends hitting the ceremonial first tee shot to kick off the tournament.

History of the Ceremonial Tee Shot at The Masters

It all began with Jock Hutchinson and Fred McLoud, who held the honor until 1973. After McLeod's death in 1976 there was a gap until 1981. Then Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson started it up, and they were soon joined by Sam Sneed.

In recent years (2012-2016), it was three shots hit by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, three of the most successful and legendary players the game has ever seen. When Arnold Palmer sadly passed away in 2016, his spot was left open until last year when Lee Elder took his spot, although health conditions prevented him from actually hitting the ball.

Tom Watson Ceremonial First Tee Shot at The Masters 2022

Fast forward to this year and we may have a new permanent member – Tom Watson. Watson, a legend in his own right and a two-time Masters winner will now join both Nicklaus and Player on the first tee in the early morning Thursday.

Together this trio owns 11 Masters titles. Watson seems like a natural selection to join this duo on a more permanent basis and its a great way to annually honor one of the game's all time greats.

Be sure to tune in for the ceremonial first tee shot ahead of Round 1 of the Masters the morning of Thursday, April 7.
