The Chicago White Sox are building something with potential, as they have been for a number of years. This season, they finally decided to take the next step, supplementing their next generation of prospects with veteran free agents.
Dallas Keuchel, Yasmani Grandal, Edwin Encarnacion, Gio Gonzalez and Nomar Mazara (via trade) are among the list of established names brought in by the White Sox going in 2020. The additions have helped boost their overall odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Viewed as a possible dark horse by some, here is a full preview of Chicago's 2020 MLB season potential outcomes and projected achievements.
White Sox Win Total
Under the assumption that each MLB team still plays the standard 162 regular-season games in 2020, the White Sox were originally projected to win 83.5 games this season, with -122 odds to hit the over and +100 odds to finish under. This 83.5 win total was tied for 16th-highest in baseball at the time, and it was considered more likely that they surpass that projection based on the odds, although, not all analysts have agreed.
White Sox Odds to Win AL Central
This is really a three-horse race in the AL Central, as the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals continue to overhaul their organizations with odds of +15000, or an implied probability of winning the division at just 6.3 percent, a piece. The White Sox currently sit third at +340, not far behind the Cleveland Indians (+290). The real team to beat will be the Minnesota Twins however, who won 101 games in 2019 and have added players since.
Chicago's +340 odds imply a 22.7 percent chance of winning the AL Central. Like I said, dark horse. To do it, they'll need the new veterans to work hand in hand with rookies like Luis Robert and recent call ups like Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease.
White Sox Odds to Win AL Pennant
The White Sox find themselves right in the middle of the American League, with the best odds to win the pennant of any third-ranked divisional team at +1600. What I mean by that is that they have the seventh best odds, falling in line behind the top two teams of each of the three divisions. This 16-to-1 outlook has an implied probability of 5.9 percent.
White Sox Odds to Win World Series
When it comes to factoring as a World Series contender, the White Sox are probably a year or two away at +3300 odds, which is 15th-best mark in the league. This gives them an implied probably of just 2.9 percent in 2020.
