The MLB's 2022 offseason has been one of the busiest in recent memory and some fans may be wondering what's caused all of the late-November action.

On Wednesday, Dec. 1st at 11:59 p.m. EST, the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) will expire.

What is the 2022 MLB Lockout?

This is an important date for the MLB and MLBPA because if the sides cannot agree on a new CBA, the league will go into a lockout.

The CBA is an agreement between the players and team owners that stipulates everything from the length of the season, rules such as the designated hitter (DH), and specifics around salaries, free agency and more.

If no agreement is reached, the league's owners will effectively lockout the players and halt all offseason baseball activities including free-agent singings.

How Long Will MLB Lockout Last?

There's no clear-cut answer around the length of the MLB Lockout. Baseball has seen previous lockouts end prior to the season's start in March and other lockouts (1981 and 1972) that led to the cancellation of games.

MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)

The collective bargaining agreement or CBA is the key to ending the lockout. The MLB and MLBPA must agree on a new CBA in order to resume baseball activities. CBA's are typically signed for 5 or more years.

When Will 2022 MLB Lockout End?

There is no definitive answer when the 2022 MLB Lockout will end. Currently, players and owners are debating through important bargaining pieces, particularly economics and the pay statuses of non-first-tier players.

Everything will halt in terms of baseball activities. Although, owners and teams will still be able to engage in discussions. This leaves the possibility of trades occurring during the lockout.
