Few teams shocked as many experts and fans last season as the Washington Football Team. Once the laughing stock of the league, Washington managed to win the NFC East in 2020 before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round. Even then, the improvements that the organization made didn't go unnoticed and they'll look to build off that success next season.
However, not everyone is a believer in the WFT. FanDuel Sportsbook doesn't have faith that they'll make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, giving them -198 odds to miss the playoffs entirely. After all the improvements that Washington has made over the offseason, one word perfectly describes these odds: disrespectful.
Washington Football Team Odds to Make Playoffs 2021
It's understandable why some people would doubt Washington, especially after they became the NFC East winners with a 7-9 record. Nevertheless, it's not like they were the top team by a fluke.
The WFT allowed just 21.2 points per game last season (T-5th), showing that they were one of the best defensive teams in the NFL. They also yielded the fifth-fewest total yards per game (316.5) while also averaging 1.4 takeaways (T-7th). Considering they managed to keep most of their defensive core over the offseason while adding important pieces to it, like first-round pick Jamin Davis, Washington's defense should be just as effective in 2021, if not more.
One area that Washington did struggle in last season was offense, scoring just 21.1 points per game (25th). Fortunately, they've improved on this side of the ball too. Ryan Fitzpatrick is an upgrade at quarterback over Alex Smith. They brought in former Carolina Panthers wideout Curtis Samuel as another weapon for the offense too. Plus, Terry McLaurin continues to be one of the best young pass-catchers in the league.
At the end of the day, Washington has proved doubters wrong in the past and they can certainly do it again in 2021.
