One of the biggest stories heading into the 2020 NFL season was the name change of the league's Washington, D.C., franchise to the Washington Football Team. Washington went on to have a successful year, capturing the NFC East title and earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2015.
Now, the team is teasing a date for an announcement of a new name.
Washington's team website dedicated to the franchise's rebranding efforts has made a notable change of late, stating that a permanent name will be unveiled in 2022. There's no official date set, but it gives fans something to look forward to and brings some much-needed certainty regarding the next team mascot.
Despite a revolving starting quarterback situation in 2020, Washington won the division thanks to its stifling defense, led by young star Chase Young. The Football Team ranked fourth in fewest points allowed and second in fewest yards.
On offense, wideout Terry McLaurin and running back Antonio Gibson are proving to be two of the top young talents at their respective positions, presenting an intriguing opportunity for whoever is Washington's starter at QB in 2021.
Washington's future looks bright, and there will soon be a new team name for fans to rally around.
