Everson Griffen may not be talked about with the same reverence as John Randle or Jared Allen, but it's hard to deny his status as one of the best pass rushers in Minnesota Vikings history. He ranks No. 7, just one spot behind Allen, on the team's all-time leaderboard for sacks with 74.5, and his 176 QB hits put him well ahead of Allen's 155.

After one year away from the team, Griffen may be on his way back to Minnesota.

Vikings News: Everson Griffen

The Vikings generated the NFL's fourth-lowest pressure rate (19.6%) in 2020 — a significant drop-off from the 21.7% rate they posted in 2019. That area was an obvious need to be addressed this offseason.

Griffen had a relatively unproductive 2020 season, notching 2.5 sacks in 7 games with the Dallas Cowboys and 3.5 in 7 games with the Detroit Lions, but at 33 years old he should still have plenty left in the tank.

He still earned a pass rush grade of 73.6 from ProFootballFocus last year, which isn't far off of his 75.9 grade from 2019.

Griffen may no longer be an every-down defender, but pairing him with Danielle Hunter on the edge on passing downs would go a long way to improving one of Minnesota's biggest defensive weaknesses.

FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds currently have the Vikings as slight underdogs to make the playoffs (-106 to make, -116 to miss) this season. A key defensive addition like Griffen could flip those odds.
