The Minnesota Vikings shocked their fanbase when they released sophomore quarterback Kellen Mond to help get to the 53-man limit ahead of Tuesday's deadline. However, it turns out that Mond isn't the only former Vikings third-round pick needing to look for a new job.
SKOR North reports that the Vikings have also cut linebacker Chazz Surratt and offensive lineman Wyatt Davis. Like Mond, both men were taken during Round 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft, with Surratt going at No. 78 while Davis was drafted 86th overall.
Vikings Roster Cuts
Fans were excited last year after the Vikings made four selections in this round during the 2021 draft. After Tuesday's roster cuts, outside linebacker Patrick Jones II is the only remaining member of the quartet.
A former two-time first-team All-ACC defender, Surratt didn't get many opportunities to succeed as a rookie, playing exclusively on special teams. Unfortunately, his 12 tackles and half a sack in two preseason games weren't enough to convince Minnesota to bring him back.
Meanwhile, Davis didn't have much better luck. He was on and off the practice squad throughout the campaign, playing only 28 special teams snaps over six games. It didn't help that he also dealt with injuries and wasn't in great shape once his rookie training camp began.
At the end of the day, Mond, Surratt and Davis are casualties of a regime change. While former general manager Rick Spielman had high hopes for the trio, it's clear that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah doesn't feel that way.
If the Vikings are going to be competitive going forward, the fat needed to be trimmed and that's exactly what Adofo-Mensah did. Fans will find out if these cuts lead to the desired improvements once the 2022 NFL season begins in less than two weeks.
