While the Houston Astros have their sights set on a potential World Series run--they currently have the second-best odds on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds--their prospects have been putting on a show throughout the 2022 minor league season. However, a handful of prospects took things to a new level in Single-A on Wednesday night.
A total of six Fayetteville Woodpeckers pitchers combined for a no-hitter against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The 3-0 victory marks the second-ever no-hitter in Single-A Fayetteville history.
Fortunately, MLB Pipeline has uploaded a video of the no-hitter's final out. Just by looking at the joy on the players' faces, you can tell how much the accomplishment means to them.
The six pitchers in question were A.J. Blubaugh, Zack Matthews, Bryant Salgado, Brett Gillis, Ronny Garcia and Austin Temple. Of the sextet, Blubaugh paced the way with five innings pitched while recording eight of his team's 14 strikeouts.
Fayetteville pitching coach John Kovalik was more than thrilled with his group's performance, describing the no-hitter as being "pretty special." He added that seeing six pitchers combining for the feat is a "crazy scenario," but that he's "very happy and proud of these kids."
Nevertheless, none of the six pitchers that played on Wednesday is on the team's top-30 prospect rankings. It'll be interesting to see if any of them can build on that performance en route to being a key piece on Houston's roster down the line.
