Lateral plays can be some of the most exciting twists in football, but only if they work out. The problem is, they rarely work out. In the NFL, lateral plays usually happen at the end of a game as a last-ditch effort or as a part of a trick play.
However, this lateral during an Indianapolis Colts vs New England Patriots game was neither the former nor the latter. It was simply a bad decision at a bad time.
Staring a sack right in the face, Colts QB Don Majkowski attempted to lateral the ball to running back Marshall Faulk. And the result was pretty much the worst-case scenario.
The lateral was instantly intercepted, effectively ending the game. It also knocked the Colts out of the playoff hunt and Majkowski never started another home game for Indy again.
Needless to say, when you consider the fallout and ramifications of this lateral, it might be the worst one of all-time.
