Steve Atwater was arguable the greatest defensive player in Denver Broncos history. He was an elite contributor in Denver for a decade, racking up almost 1,200 tackles and 24 interceptions, while making some crucial plays in Super Bowl XXXII.
More than his stats, though, his intensity will always be remembered by Broncos fans. That intensity was on full display when he destroyed Kansas City Chiefs running back Christian Okoye.
More than just a clash of two players with outstanding nicknames, "The Smiling Assassin" was one of the hardest hitting safeties in the NFL and "The Nigerian Nightmare" was one of the most punishing rushers.
This play looked like an old-fashioned Oklahoma drill, with Atwater meeting the 260-pound Okoye head-on in an otherwise wide-open rushing lane.
Okoye had made a career of putting defenders on their backs in spots just like this one, but Atwater was a different breed of defender, and he laid an incredibly punishing hit on Okoye.
