With the Las Vegas Raiders' veterans showing up for Wednesday's activities, the team's training camp is officially underway. While rookies and experienced players alike will be battling for roster spots, a couple of key Raiders have their eyes set on contract extensions before the upcoming season.
Insider Ian Rapoport appeared on NFL Now on Wednesday to discuss the two Las Vegas players in question: superstar tight end Darren Waller and linebacker Denzel Perryman.
Raiders Contract Rumors
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Waller is looking for a big payday with his next contract. The former Pro-Bowler signed a four-year, $29.8 million with the Raiders in 2019, but is now worth more than that. Since then, he ranks second among TEs in receptions (252) and receiving yards (3,006) while being tied for fifth with 14 touchdowns.
The good news, according to Rapoport, is that Waller is at least showing up for training camp. He's made it clear that he wants his deal done "the right way" and there's no reason to believe that he's in danger of holding out.
It'll also be interesting to see if Las Vegas works out a new deal with Perryman, whom they acquired in a trade last August. The 29-year-old was a great fit with the Raiders, finishing with a career-high 154 tackles en route to making his first-ever Pro Bowl appearance.
Keeping that in mind, Perryman spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon to say that any upcoming contract talks are in his agent's hands. The Miami, Florida, native's sole focus is on the 2022 NFL season, so any negotiations shouldn't disrupt the season.
Hopefully, the Raiders can extend Waller and Perryman without any drama. The future for the organization hasn't looked this bright in a long time and both players have played key roles in that transformation.
Raiders Super Bowl Odds
The Raiders hope that Waller and Perryman can continue what they've been doing if it means a legitimate shot at the Vince Lombardi Trophy. For now, Las Vegas has +4000 odds (T-No. 17) to win Super Bowl LVII, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
