Just like 25 other teams around baseball (soon to be 26), the Minnesota Twins are already busy thinking about an offseason of roster tweaks, tough free agency decisions and the potential for trades. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey recently spoke about the state of the Twins to kick off this offseason, highlighting one position the team is considering a major change.

Twins insider Aaron Gleeman reported some of the major points from Falvey's offseason press conference, indicating the team will look to make a key catching addition this Winter.

Minnesota used three names at the position in 2022 including Ryan Jeffers, Gary Sanchez and Sandy Leon. Both Leon and Sanchez are heading for free agency and there's early expectation the Twins are not interesting in brining them back.

Instead, Falvey is considering a "co-catching model" that many teams around baseball have begun to employ. One of the best examples of this is the New York Yankees. New York moved on from Sanchez before the 2022 season, and acquired Jose Trevino to split time with the incumbent starter Kyle Higashioka. Trevino ended up with a slight majority of the reps because of his All-Star status, but the two each played at least 82 games.

Falvey said "when you look at teams across baseball, the co-catcher model is probably two-thirds of the league. I’d anticipate us probably looking at it again in some way like that," before emphasizing Jeffers' ability to hit left-handed pitching. It sounds like the Twins will be in the market for another defensive catcher, but one that excels against righty.
