Twins Get Bad News With Sonny Gray Injury Update

The Minnesota Twins are looking to keep pace in the American League Central division, but will have to stay healthy in order to do so. The team recently got some bad news regarding starting pitcher Sonny Gray as the 10th-year pro will be placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring injury.

Sonny Gray Injury Update

Gray originally left his last start against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday after just 1.2 innings of work. Something was obviously bothering him and he could be seen favoring the back of his upper leg on his way to the dugout. The good news is that the issue does not seem to be severe in its longevity.

Manager Rocco Baldelli even mentioned that the team expects Gray to miss only one trip through the rotation. That's still a major hit considering Gray was brought in to be Minnesota's go-to No. 2 starter. The 32-year-old finished the 2021 season with a 7-9 record and 4.19 ERA in 26 starts (135.1 innings).

It's unclear as of right now who will be given the spot start for the Twins when that day comes, but the top candidate is likely Josh Winder. Winder made his MLB debut taking over following Gray's exit and gave up two earned runs on four hits across 5.1 innings. He also struck out a pair of Boston batters.

Gray joins a list of injured Twins that already includes starting pitchers Randy Dobnak and Kenta Maeda. Both of those hurlers are still recovering from issues stemming from last September. For now, Minnesota has odds set at +4500 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
