No one was shocked to see Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence get drafted No. 1 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. But his 2021 MVP odds may be a different story. His chances to take home the award look surprisingly realistic considering he is a rookie quarterback transitioning into the NFL.
Lawrence's odds are currently set at +9000, according to NFL future odds posted on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Trevor Lawrence MVP Odds
That mark ranks ahead of notable NFL players including running back Alvin Kamara, defensive lineman Aaron Donald and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It also ties him with an established quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger, and puts him ahead of fellow first-round rookie QBs like Trey Lance (+12000), Justin Fields (+15000), Mac Jones (+18000) and Zach Wilson (+18000).
While he still is considered a long shot for the award, Lawence's odds are intriguingly high given no rookie quarterback has been named the NFL MVP. In fact, only one rookie has ever won the award and that was Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown back in 1957.
The Jaguars have made the postseason just once in the last 13 seasons. It would most likely take Lawrence leading them back there for him to take home the NFL MVP. As arguably the most talented QB prospect of the last decade, Lawrence certainly has the raw ability to take home the hardware. But turning that into MVP-level production in year one is a tall task for even the most-talented QBs.
But Lawrence is a heavy favorite to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 with odds set at +270, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Becoming the NFL's first QB to win MVP as a rookie still feels unlikely, but taking home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors would be quite the consolation prize.
And the fact that Lawrence ranks as highly as he does in the MVP odds just speaks to how special this kid is.
