With nothing left to play for in the 2022 MLB season, it isn't surprising that the Chicago Cubs already have their sights set on free agency. Cubs president Jed Hoyer recently said that his team will be "aggressive" in free agency, with two-time All-Star shortstop Trea Turner rumored as a top target.

NBC Sports Chicago talked to Turner earlier this week about the possibility of joining the Cubs this offseason. While the 29-year-old didn't rule out Chicago as a destination, he made it clear that he needs to know the Cubs' plans for the future in full detail if he's to sign in the Windy City.

Turner said that it's "mandatory" to know how the next few years in Chicago could unfold. He did his research after "learning how this process works from talking to other guys." Not only does he want to know the plan for himself, but also how it could impact his loved ones.

"From multiple organizations, you’d want to know what they expect or where it’s going or what they’re trying to do — kind of a vision."

You can't blame Turner for being cautious. The Cubs will likely miss the MLB postseason for the third time in four years and are a combined 121-158 over their last 279 games. Chances are Turner doesn't want to spend a chunk of his remaining prime on a directionless rebuilding team.

Nevertheless, bringing in Turner would seriously upgrade Chicago's infield. The veteran speedster has been great in 2022, leading the MLB with 146 hits while tallying 31 doubles, 18 home runs, 83 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and a .306/.344/.493 slash line through 117 games.

The Cubs will likely face competition for Turner's services if they go that route. He's already confirmed that he's interested in playing for the Dodgers again. Plus, there shouldn't be a shortage of contenders hoping to add his quick legs and consistent bat to the lineup.

Cubs fans still have a ways to go to find out of Turner will be joining them next season. MLB teams can't sign free agents until five days after the World Series concludes this fall.
