It's no secret the Green Bay Packers are contemplating a move for a wide receiver ahead of the NFL trade deadline. It turns out Green Bay may be targeting players who are still on their rookie deals, with Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Chase Claypool being brought up recently as a potential target.
However, the Packers have now been linked to another pass-catcher who's actually a longtime veteran.
ESPN insider Dan Graziano reports he's heard Green Bay mentioned as a possible suitor for Arizona Cardinals wide receiver AJ Green. He's been squeezed out in Arizona and could provide a veteran presence the Packers are lacking.
"One interesting name I heard for them was A.J. Green, who doesn't seem to be a factor for Arizona and would bring a veteran presence the Green Bay WR room doesn't have right now."- Dan Graziano
The seven-time Pro Bowle is far removed from his days as a No. 1 threat, but he's still been productive after playing into his 30s. Green's 842 receiving yards last year ranked second on the Cardinals and was his highest mark since 2017, so he still has some juice left in the tank.
At 6-foot-4, the contested catch ace would give Aaron Rodgers a big-bodied wideout to turn to in important situations. Rodgers is currently lacking a veteran go-to target with Randall Cobb on IR, while Sammy Watkins just returned after missing four games. Allen Lazard is also banged up, clouding his Week 8 status.
Green Bay has regularly abstained from acquiring mid-season rentals, but at 3-4 and with clear issues on offense, this may be the time to finally make a move.
