If you started the San Francisco 49ers or Minnesota Vikings' defense in Week 1, you've felt just how inconsistent and matchup-dependent fantasy football defense scoring can be. Few teams are true every-week starting options. That's why "streaming" the defense position, picking defenses off the waiver wire as needed every week, can be such a useful strategy.
These three defenses, rostered in 50 percent or less of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues, are the top waiver wire streaming options in Week 2.
3. Arizona Cardinals (4% Rostered)
The Arizona Cardinals were one of Week 1's biggest surprises, upsetting the reigning NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers. They held San Fran to 20 points (9.6 below their average from 2019), getting to Jimmy Garoppolo for 5 QB hits and 3 sacks. Things get much easier for Arizona in Week 2 against the Washington Football Team. Washington had an impressive upset of their own in Week 1, but the Football Team gave up 10 QB hits and 3 sacks of their own, while Dwanye Haskins averaged just 6.4 adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A).
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (25% Rostered)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense struggled in Week 1, but failing to stop the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome isn't anything to worry about. The Bucs are at home in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers. Carolina dropped 30 in Week 1, but that was against a weak Las Vegas Raiders defense. Tampa quietly checked in at No. 6 in Football Outsiders' defensive DVOA metric in 2019, and this unit is legit. FanDuel Sportsbook has them as 9.5-point favorites in this one (biggest favorites of the week). Being a heavy favorite correlates well with fantasy upside, thanks to the extra opportunities for sacks and interceptions afforded by getting a lead and forcing your opponents to go pass-heavy while playing catch-up.
1. Tennessee Titans (51% Rostered)
We're making a one-percent exception to the rostered limit for the Tennessee Titans this week because they're such a strong streaming option. They check in at No. 2 in our Week 2 defense rankings and are available in 49 percent of leagues. The Jacksonville Jaguars looked surprisingly good in Week 1, but the Titans are still tied as the week's second biggest favorites at -8.5. They didn't generate much fantasy production in Week 1, but they did rack up 5 QB hits and 4 TFLs, suggesting that their 0-sack day was a bit of a fluke. As heavy favorites, they should get plenty of chances to get after Gardner Minshew while the Jags try to play catch-up this week.
