Defensive scoring is way up in the 2019 fantasy football season. Through 12 weeks the New England Patriots have already scored 190 fantasy points, outscoring last year's league-leading mark of 187 from the Chicago Bears. The San Francisco 49ers aren't far behind, with 149, and both teams rank in the top 35 for fantasy scoring across all positions.

Defensive production can be volatile though, and the top unit for a given week can depend heavily on the matchups each defense draws. With that in mind, here are our top 12 fantasy football defenses for Week 13 of the 2019 NFL season.

Week 13 Defense Rankings

12. Los Angeles Rams at Arizona Cardinals

11. Indianapolis Colts vs Tennessee Titans

10. Kansas City Chiefs vs Oakland Raiders

The Kansas City Chiefs are 9.5-point favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook, and as of Monday afternoon that has them tied as Week 13's biggest favorites. The Oakland Raiders offense has plenty of upside, and KC isn't a high-floor play, but likely playing with a huge lead and forcing Oakland into a bunch of obvious passing situations creates big upside for both sacks and turnovers. We also just saw Oakland give up 18 fantasy points to the New York Jets defense in Week 12.

9. Green Bay Packers at New York Giants

8. Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos

7. New York Jets at Cincinnati Bengals

As mentioned above, the Jets just scored 18 fantasy points in their last outing, and they've now averaged 12.3 per game over their last four. They've got to benefit from a bunch of favorable matchups in that stretch, but that doesn't change in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals, who are giving up top-five fantasy production to opposing defenses.

6. Philadelphia Eagles at Miami Dolphins

5. Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

4. Dallas Cowboys vs Buffalo Bills

3. Baltimore Ravens vs San Francisco 49ers

It's not often you're better off rolling with the 49ers opponents' defense than you are with the Niners, but it's also not often they're up against a team as good as the Baltimore Ravens, who held the Patriots' D to a season-low four points in Week 9. Baltimore has been less consistent on the other side of the ball, but their production has really picked up lately. Four of their five best single-game fantasy scores have come in their last four games, with double-digit points in each of the four and an elite average of 17.5 per game during that time.

2. Carolina Panthers vs Washington Redskins

1. New England Patriots at Houston Texans

In a week with most of the top fantasy defenses drawing tough matchups, the Patriots don't get much of a downgrade from taking on the Texans. The Pats have failed to score at least 10 fantasy points in only two of 11 games this year, and they're on a historically great pace with an average of 17.3 per game on the year. The Texans have limited opposing defenses to below-average fantasy production, but we have seen that they're not a must-avoid matchup, as they've given up top-10 scores to defenses three times in the last nine weeks.
