After shaking up their coaching staff last week, the Detroit Tigers are starting to make changes to their roster as well.

The Tigers added a utility player off waivers on Wednesday and released a pitcher in a corresponding move.

Detroit claimed Jermaine Palacios off waivers from the Minnesota Twins, taking him off their division rival's hands. Palacios struggled offensively in his first MLB season with a .143/.184/.229 batting line last year but showed the ability to play multiple positions, appearing at every infield position (including pitcher) except for catcher.

The 26-year-old's versatility makes him a nice bench piece for the Tigers, especially if his hitting improves in 2023.

To make room for Palacios, Detroit released right-handed pitcher Drew Hutchison. Hutchison, 32, had spent the last two seasons for the Tigers. While he was effective in limited action during 2021 with a 2.11 ERA in 21 1/3 innings, he regressed in 2022, finishing with a 3-9 record and a 4.53 ERA over 105 1/3 frames.

With Hutchison due for a raise in arbitration, Detroit is able to save some money here while also adding flexibility and youth to the club. Hutchison apparently wasn't in the future plans for the rebuilding Tigers, but perhaps another team will pick him up as pitching depth.
