The Detroit Tigers will look to turn things around in 2023 after finishing third worst in the AL last season. Detroit's made a few moves this offseason to improve its roster as new executive Scott Harris hopes to start his tenure strong.
The Tigers' latest signing helps boost the team's catching depth.
Detroit has inked catcher Andrew Knapp to a minor league deal. The contract includes an invitation to Spring Training, where the veteran will look to crack the Opening Day roster.
The 2022 campaign was a hectic one for Knapp. He exited Spring Training as a member of the Cincinnati Reds but was released right before the season began. Knapp then went on to log appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants in 2022.
In all, Knapp finished the season with 4 RBIs while slashing .143/.262/.154 across 14 games. He enjoyed a successful five-year run with the Philadelphia Phillies to begin his career, recording 13 home runs and 62 RBIs in 309 contests.
Knapp presents an experienced and capable catching option at the very least for Detroit. His switch-hitting abilities add some appeal as well.
