The Houston Texans walked out of the 2022 NFL Draft with nine new prospects that they hope can help them build for the future. Rookies don't always become impact players right away, which is why management is looking to further bolster the defense with a veteran presence.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that the Texans are signing free-agent pass-rusher Rasheem Green to a one-year contract. The former seventh-round pick has spent the last four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Green was primarily a backup over his first three seasons in Seattle, starting in just eight of his 36 games played. That all changed in 2021 when he started in all but one of the Seahawks' contests, recording 48 total tackles, 6.5 sacks and four passes defended.

The Texans' 32 sacks last season were tied for fifth-worst in the NFL, while defensive end Jonathan Greenard (8.0) was the only Houston player to record more than 4.0. Although they did add Kingsley Keke through free agency this offseason, it's clear that the Texans needed more pass-rush help.

The good news is that Green should help by being a nuisance to opposing quarterbacks. On top of his 6.5 sacks last season, he also had 15 QB hits, 10 hurries and 24 pressures. At only 24 years old, there's still plenty of room to grow.

Green continuing his progression could help the Texans in their search for success next season. It's going to be quite the uphill battle, though, with FanDuel Sportsbook favoring Houston to miss the 2022-23 NFL postseason at -2500 odds.
