Marcus Maye is one of the most underrated safeties in the NFL. If he wasn't toiling away in obscurity with the New York Jets for the past few seasons, he'd likely be a much bigger star than he is right now. However, it appears as if those days could be coming to an end. Maye's agent recently bashed the Jets on Twitter. It's fair to assume negotiations aren't exactly going well.
If things continue to get worse, as they did with former Jets' safety Jamal Adams just one season ago, here are three teams that should steal Maye away from New York.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
If the team with the second-most cap space in the NFL is hesitant about giving Maye a big deal, maybe he should go to the team with the most space. The Jacksonville Jaguars have a whopping $82 million to burn this offseason, and Maye would be be a significant upgrade over the safeties the team has right now.
2. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers' defense outperformed expectations in a big way last season. They were the league's second-worst scoring defense in 2019, but they finished 18th in that regard in 2020. Pairing Maye with standout rookie safety Jeremy Chinn could shore up what was a bottom-10 pass defense by DVOA last year.
1. Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team has the sixth-most cap space in the NFL right now, and they have a hole at safety opposite Kamren Curl. Maye received a stellar 85.8 coverage grade from ProFootballFocus in 2020, and he'd shore up the backend of this secondary in a big way. Having a ballhawk like Maye patrolling the defensive backfield while studs like Chase Young, Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen rush the passer is the recipe for a truly elite defense.
