The New Orleans Saints are in the middle of a full-fledged competition to determine their next starting quarterback. After Jameis Winston re-signed with New Orleans this offseason, he was considered the strong favorite over Taysom Hill to succeed Drew Brees.
However, Hill appears to be making up ground in this battle of QBs.
Saints QB Depth Chart
Hill owned +220 odds to be the Saints' Week 1 starter in late June, according to FanDuel Sportsbook Colorado. But those numbers are on the rise following the start of training camp.
Hill is now +135 to start for the Saints in Week 1. Winston, meanwhile, has dropped from -280 odds to just -170.
The gap between the two signal-callers is clearly shrinking. Hill made it a priority to adjust his offseason workout regiment for a possible competition, and it appears to be paying off.
It was Hill whom Sean Payton turned to in Weeks 11-14 with Brees injured in 2020. He went 3-1 during that stretch, completing 71.9% of his passes for 834 yards, 4 TDs and 2 INTs. Hill added 209 yards and 4 scores on the ground as well.
The fact that there's no clear option at starter yet is a good sign for Hill's chances to beat out Winston. Their play in preseason could play a huge role in determing who gets the Week 1 nod against the Green Bay Packers.
