NFL minicamps are one of the last opportunities for players to grab some attention ahead of July's training camps. When it comes to the New York Giants, a surprise defender has been making the most of his opportunity.
Cornerback Madre Harper has been turning heads at the Giants minicamp. Most of the team's CBs didn't attend the recent OTAs, which gave Harper a bigger stage to grab his coaches' attention. Judging by some of the reports, he succeeded in that regard.

According to ESPN, Harper "opened some eyes this spring" by bulking up and taking advantage of the opportunity at the OTAs created by the absent cornerbacks. Sometimes that's all it takes to turn a player's entire career around.
After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Harper found himself on the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of last season. His stint with the team didn't last long as the Giants were willing to sign him to their roster on October 1, 2020. While he didn't end up starting in any games, Harper did make nine appearances and finished the campaign with 5 total tackles (all solo) and a fumble recovery.
The hope is that Harper's current improvements will lead to regular season success. The former Southern Illinois Salukis CB did not stop any passes towards a player that he was covering, allowing 3 receptions and a touchdown on three targets. It's obviously a small sample size, but it still shows that offseason success may not guarantee the same once the regular season arrives.
Even if Harper does improve the Giants' secondary, there's still a lot of work to do before the organization returns to the postseason. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, New York will likely miss the 2021 playoffs at -300 odds. With that being said, the Giants' Super Bowl odds sitting at +6500 (24th) means that Giants fans might have to wait another year before their team comes close to being contenders again.
