Surprise Defender Turned Heads at Browns Minicamp
By Larry Rupp
NFL minicamps give rookies a chance to make an immediate impression on the coaching staff and showcase why they deserve a spot on the team. It looks like defensive tackle Tommy Togiai is taking full advantage of his opportunity as he continues to turn heads for the Cleveland Browns.
Tommy Togiai Browns
Togiai was the Browns' fourth-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft and has surprised some people so far in the team's offseason programs. He has a unique combination of power and quickness that is necessary to make it in the NFL.
The former Ohio State Buckeye played three college seasons and was a steady force along the defensive line for head coach Ryan Day. Overall, Togiai racked up 49 tackles (8.5 for loss), 3.0 sacks, 3 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble across 22 games played.
The opportunity is there for Togiai to make an immediate impact in Cleveland as the players ahead of him on the depth chart are far from locks. Veteran Malik Jackson has a long injury history and first-year Brown Andrew Billings did not play during the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.
Togiai will be an important depth piece for this team moving forward, but keep an eye on him in training camp as he looks to take on an even bigger role. The Browns head into the fall with the seventh-best odds to win the Super Bowl at +1600, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
