Steve Smith may be a few years removed from stepping on an NFL field, but he's certainly kept his name in the news since his 2017 retirement.

Most recently he did that by taking a strangely personal, out-of-the-blue dig at former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

Smith never even played alongside Benjamin, departing for the Baltimore Ravens before the Panthers drafted Benjamin in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

A fierce competitor, Smith seems to just really hate the idea that fans might think any WR in Carolina will ever exceed his greatness.

Of course, an unnecessary comment like this from Smith really just lends more credence to the idea that he is the "jealous uncle." Smith may be a Panthers legend, but getting angry and taking shots when fans are excited about new players is not a great look.

Benjamin's NFL career may have flamed out, but taking a dig at a guy who hasn't been with the Panthers since 2017 (or even in the NFL since 2018) is just straight-up unnecessary.
