New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has done a lot of spending to give his club the best shot at ending a 47-year World Series drought. The Mets are set to enter the 2023 MLB season with the most expensive payroll (over $304 million, per Spotrac), which has actually gained him some praise from an unexpected National League clubhouse.

New York Post's Jon Heyman reports that LA Dodgers star Freddie Freeman is a huge supporter of what Cohen has done. The former NL MVP told Heyman that the Mets owner's moves prove how much he cares about the team and the fans, adding "I love what [Cohen's] doing."

Freeman's comments are surprising considering that he was one of the Mets' biggest enemies during his time with the rival Atlanta Braves. On the other hand, New York fielding a more competitive roster means that the Dodgers must step up their game if they want to win the NL, which is a challenge Freeman welcomes.

"Why not? [Cohen's] telling his fans, I’m with you. It’s excited the fan base to have an owner that wants to win as much as they do.”

To get a better idea of the Mets' spending, the second-highest payroll in the MLB is the New York Yankees at nearly $268 million. The Mets have 12 different players making eight-digit figures, highlighted by both Max Scherzer and free-agent acquisition Justin Verlander each sitting at $43,333,333 apiece.

On top of that, Heyman reports that the Mets will likely need to pay around $109 million in taxes due to their overspending. Nevertheless, that won't matter in Cohen's eyes if his team ends the campaign with a World Series title.

As it stands, the Mets are tied for the third-best odds (+800) to win the 2023 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
