With James Conner likely gone in free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to address the running back position this offseason.
They started to make moves in that direction on Tuesday, signing a depth piece in Kalen Ballage.
Kalen Ballage Steelers
Don't expect this addition to mean the Steelers are done with their running back additions. Ballage played his first two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, rushing for jus 326 yards on 110 carries.
He didn't fare much better in his third NFL season in 2020, tallying a combined 303 yards on 91 carries with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers.
Ballage does bring a bit more value as a receiver (29 receptions for 166 yards in 2020) than Benny Snell, but Snell should remain firmly ahead of Ballage on the depth chart on early downs, and whoever Pittsburgh brings in to be the RB1 will also likely be ahead of Ballage in all scenarios.
A cheap one-year signing, Ballage may also prove to be nothing more than a training camp body who doesn't make the final roster for 2021.
FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL futures odds have the Steelers ranked just 17th in the NFL with +3200 odds to win the Super Bowl next season.
