The Los Angeles Angels endured another disappointing season in 2022. After getting out to a hot start, the sky began falling for the Angels and it eventually lead to the firing of manager Joe Maddon and an eighth consecutive year missing the playoffs.

Shohei Ohtani Free Agency

This has clearly started to wear on Angels superstar two-way player Shohei Ohtani. He explained in a recent interview in Japan that while he was happy with his personal performance in 2022, the team's overall performance was disappointing.

Ohtani is set to be a free agent after next season and the 28-year-old will likely command the highest average annual value of any player in MLB history for his next contract. With Mike Trout already on the books and the Angels seemingly unable to build a winning team around Ohtani and Trout, the former could already be eyeing his way out of town.

It was no secret the Angels were listening to offers for Ohtani at this past trade deadline. Maybe in part because they wanted to sell high when the season was lost, or maybe because they know they won't be willing to pay his price tag. With one that will be as high as Ohtani will be seeking, paired with a winning situation Ohtani clearly is seeking, it greatly narrows down the potential trade partners, and the teams he would potentially sign with.

The Angels will have to decide what their future plans are and if they include Ohtani at the massive value his next contract will command. Regardless, he isn't sounding like a guy looking to make any long term plans in Los Angeles right now.
