With just four teams remaining in the NFL Playoffs, much of the league is now focused on free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft. ESPN expert Mel Kiper has released his first mock draft for the 2023 class and he has the Seattle Seahawks making a splash with the No. 5 pick.

Seahawks 2023 Mock Draft

Kiper projects the Seahawks will select University of Kentucky QB Will Levis at No. 5. Levis is an intriguing prospect. He has all the physical tools, ability to play a pro-style offense and an NFL body, but his tape can raise some question marks at times. Nevertheless, NFL teams will always be enamored by the projection of someone like that.

The curious part is the Seahawks' current quarterback situation. Geno Smith proved this season he deserves to be the team's starter, and all we have already heard there is mutual interest to bring the free-agent QB back to Seattle next season.

The team could very much view Smith as a bridge for a year or two while they get Levis ready. Smith is already 32 years old, so its not hard to see he has a shorter leash than a rookie QB would in terms of timeline. This was also Smith's first really productive season as a starter in the NFL, so his ability to replicate that next season and beyond still has to remain a question within the minds of Seattle's decision makers.

While Levis might not solve the most pressing need on this roster, he does provide both a future and insurance option for the Seahawks, who only lucked into having a pick this high because of the Denver Broncos' unexpected failures this past season. The Seahawks might not get the chance to take a quarterback in the top five again for a few years.

Some might scratch their head at this pick, but it could prove to be a franchise-saver a year from now.
