The Seattle Seahawks were dealt a huge blow on Sunday after starting running back Rashaad Penny was carted to the locker room with a lower-leg injury. A player leaving the field in that fashion is never a good sign, raising significant concerns about Penny, who's struggled to stay healthy during his career.
Now the Seahawks have received some devastating news on their top RB.
Penny suffered a fractured tibia against the Detroit Lions, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport. This injury puts the former first-round pick's season in serious jeopardy. Depending upon the nature of the issue, he may require surgery that would sideline him for the foreseeable future.
This is just gutting news for Penny. Injuries have continually kept him off of the field during his young career, as he's failed to play more than 10 games in each of the past three seasons. A torn ACL in 2019 cut that campaign short, and resulted in him suiting up in just three contests in 2020.
Penny has shown astounding resilience to get back on the field despite his health struggles. Though he's facing another lengthy recovery, the fifth-year pro isn't one to count out.
Seahawks rookie Kenneth Walker III will likely be thrust into a larger role in Penny's absence. He posted a career-high 88 yards on eight carries on Sunday.
