The Seattle Seahawks opened the NFL season trying to figure out who their new No. 1 quarterback would be following Russell Wilson's departure. While Friday's preseason loss to the Dallas Cowboys wasn't what the Seahawks hoped for, it did give them the answer to their QB situation.

After Friday's game, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll announced that Geno Smith will start in Week 1 of the regular season. Carroll said that the veteran "earned it" and that he "won the job," beating out Drew Lock for the honor.

Carroll's announcement hardly comes as much of a shock. While Smith only attempted six passes against the Cowboys, Lock's disastrous performance sealed the competition's fate. The former Denver Broncos signal-caller completed only 13-of-24 passes for 171 yards, throwing one touchdown to three interceptions.

Nevertheless, this won't be the first time that Smith has to step up in Wilson's absence. When the latter was hurt last year, it was Smith who stepped up in relief, completing 65-of-95 passing attempts (68.4%) for 702 yards and five TDs with only one INT over four games (three starts).

While that's a small sample size, Smith still looked much better than Lock. The former Missouri product went 0-3 in three starts with the Broncos to close out the 2021 season, throwing for 560 yards and just one touchdown pass.

Smith's familiarity with the Seahawks playbook also helps make him the better starting option. Hopefully, he makes the most of this opportunity. Seattle definitely needs him to step up right away, especially since their Week 1 matchup is against none other than Wilson and the Broncos.

Seahawks vs Broncos Week 1 Odds

Unfortunately, it's shaping up to be an uphill battle for Smith and co. Despite being the home team, FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Seahawks as 6.5-point underdogs against the Broncos with -115 odds to cover the spread.
