After much speculation over the last few weeks, the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to trade for Houston Texans star pass rusher, Jadeveon Clowney. The trade is not yet official and is pending physicals, but if completed, it will add a big piece to an already talented Seattle defense.
The Seahawks' defense admittedly isn't what it was during the Legion of Boom days, especially considering the majority of the players that made up that group are no longer with the team. Although, the Seahawks' current defense is no group of slouches, especially upfront. Adding a player like Clowney to the mix will increase their depth and give them a true superstar when it comes to rushing the passer.
The depth could be needed more than it looks like on paper, given Ziggy Ansah's injury history.
When to Draft Seattle Seahawks Defense in Fantasy Football
In terms of fantasy, according to FantasyPro's ADP, the Seahawks are being drafted as the 17th defense. Which, in most leagues, keeps them on the waiver wire after the draft. This could all change with the addition of Clowney.
Over the last two seasons, Clowney has averaged over nine sacks a year, despite only playing in 15 games last season. Over the last three years, Clowney has recorded 24.5 sacks, despite missing three games. Although, his talents don't only help when it comes to rushing the quarterback, he's great at getting into the backfield to make tackles regardless of who has the ball. Over the last three years, Clowney has a total of 53 tackles for loss.
With a front seven like the Seahawks could now field, their ADP is expected to rise at least a couple of spots. This could make them a great value pick in deeper leagues and surely a team to keep an eye on in 10-12 team leagues, or stash on your bench as a backup defense and play the matchups week to week.
