Scott Boras Calls Out Steve Cohen, Mets for Kumar Rocker Situation
Former Vanderbilt ace Kumar Rocker heard his name called as a top-10 MLB Draft pick once again in 2022, this time as the No. 3 overall selection by the Texas Rangers. It was just last year Rocker was drafted No. 10 by the New York Mets, but the team elected to not sign the pitcher due to medical concerns.
With Rocker ending up as one of the top picks again, agent Scott Boras made sure to call out the Mets and owner Steve Cohen.
Boras appeared on The Show podcast with Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman over All-Star Weekend to discuss a few topics, including Rocker. He made sure to highlight what he told Cohen and how his team "strongly" disagreed with New York's medical appraisal of the hurler.
"I told Steve Cohen that while you’re an owner, you just have to listen to people that appraise certain elements of drafted players. And we strongly disagree with the appraisal that the Mets placed on Kumar."- Scott Boras
It's no surprise to see Boras taking a victory lap and attempting to rehash the drama that went down last year. Ultimately it didn't work out between the two sides, and only time will tell who made the right call.
The Mets still made out in the end, receiving the No. 11 pick in 2022, which they used to select promising catching prospect Kevin Parada. New York's VP of scouting revealed after the draft that Rocker going above projections at third overall actually helped the Mets, as it made other talent (like Parada) available later than they were expected to be.
Hopefully both sides can finally move on from this situation as Rocker begins his Rangers career.
