Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Sammy Watkins, has, at times, shown NFL superstar potential since his college days at Clemson. After combining for over 2,000 yards in his first two seasons in the league, Watkins struggled with injuries in his third season, and has had a difficult time finding an established role in an offense in either of his last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.
With news that Chiefs leading receiver, Tyreek Hill, could be out of the lineup for 2019, Watkins provides fantasy owners with WR1 upside heading into the season. There has already been talk of rookie WR, Mecole Hardman's value as a fantasy sleeper, but it's maybe even more likely that Watkins would be one of the main beneficiary of Hill's absence in his second year with the explosive Chiefs offense.
Last season, the Chiefs had one of the most fantasy-friendly offenses in the NFL. They led the league in total offense (425.6 yards per game), points per game (35.3) and total touchdowns (71). This was thanks, in large part, to Tyreek Hill, who accounted for 1,479 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
With Hill likely missing time during the 2019 season due to an off-field incident, the Chiefs will need another playmaker to step up. Enter Watkins, who started only nine games for the Chiefs last season due to injury.
Watkins has demonstrated his big play ability over the course of his young career, averaging 15.4 yards per reception in his first five seasons. Additionally, he has 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash, and has shown that he has what it takes to take the top off the defense.
If he can stay healthy, Watkins could take a massive leap forward in his second year in Andy Reid's offense. His considerable upside without Hill needs to be taken into account for fantasy football drafts this season.
