While there's still one week left in the preseason, many NFL players and fans have their sights set on Week 1 of the regular season. One of the more intriguing first-week matchups involves a pair of NFC South rivals as the New Orleans Saints are slated to visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The Saints made it abundantly clear on Wednesday that they're already thinking about that Week 1 showdown. Team insider Ross Jackson reports that New Orleans "spent most of practice today with 28-3 up on the scoreboard."

Of course, that score refers to the Falcons' infamous blown lead against the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LI.

Saints vs Falcons Week 1

Was the Saints' move petty? Sure, it certainly adds another layer to their rivalry with the Falcons. Nevertheless, while it's fun to laugh at Atlanta's misfortunes, it isn't like New Orleans has had much playoff success lately. The Saints have just five victories in seven postseason appearances since their Super Bowl XLIV victory.

The Saints and Falcons have met 105 times over the years, resulting in a 53-52 split in favor of Atlanta. Having said that, the Saints have had more recent success, winning seven of their last nine meetings with their divisional rivals.

The two teams split the 2021 season series, with the Falcons winning 27-25 in Week 8 before the Saints got their win back with a 30-20 victory in Week 18. Only time will tell if things will be evenly matched again or if New Orleans can take advantage of Atlanta losing franchise quarterback Matt Ryan this offseason.

At the end of the day, one thing is certain: the Saints-Falcons rivalry is alive and well ahead of the 2022 NFL season.

Saints vs Falcons Week 1 Odds

With more than two weeks to go until Week 1, things look promising for New Orleans. The Saints are currently the 5.5-point road favorites over the Falcons with -110 odds to cover, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
