Rookie running back Abram Smith will not begin his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, who waived him on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Baylor product apparently did not make enough of a positive impression during training camp, as he was squeezed out of New Orleans' crowded running back room that includes Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram and Dwayne Washington, among others.

The undrafted free agent was deemed expendable after struggling with his efficiency and ball security during preseason action, which included a fumble against the Houston Texans.

The Saints are expected to lean heavily on their ground game this year with mediocre quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton leading the offense, so there wasn't room or time for Smith to work through his issues once the season started.

With more roster cuts coming throughout the league later this week, Smith will likely get attention from other NFL teams now that he's available. Running back is a punishing position with a high attrition rate, and Smith has some upside as a young player with less mileage on his body compared to veteran alternatives.
