After Jared Cook left for the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, the New Orleans Saints' tight end position appeared to turn over to Cook's backup in Adam Trautman. The second-year pro looked to take a big step forward this season, however, that optimism took a huge blow on Monday night.

In the Saints' gritty 23-21 preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Trautman was carted off the field after suffering an injury to his foot. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Saints will await further MRI tests on Trautman's foot on Tuesday.

While nothing conrete has been released on Trautman's status, this could be a huge blow to the Saints' tight end room. The 2020 third-round pick from Dayton saw action in 15 games during his rookie campaign. He sat firmly behind Cook on the depth chart, only garnering 16 targets to Cook's 60.

Still, Trautman hauled in 15 of his 16 targets while recording 171 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. That's good for a 93.8 catch percentage and 11.4 yards per catch.

The New Orleans staff will hope for the best for their new starting tight end. Currently, New Orleans owns +110 odds to make the postseason and +330 odds to win the NFC South on FanDuel Sportsbook.
