The New Orleans Saints will have a new permanent starting quarterback in 2021 after the long-anticipated retirement of Drew Brees. New Orleans opted to re-sign Jameis Winston this offseason, setting up a QB competition between him and Taysom Hill for the starting role.
Who gets the nod from Sean Payton is a huge storyline heading into next season. ProFootballFocus has offered their prediction on how the Saints' starter competition will play out.
PFF sees Winston taking over as Brees' successor in 2021. This is the opportunity he's been waiting for since the 2019 season, when he was last a full-time starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, Hill isn't going to hand the job offer. He's taking his preparation as a QB seriously this offseason with hopes of earning the gig. After all, Payton gave Hill the nod as starter last season for four games while Brees was injured.
Winston can certainly produce as starter. He threw for a league-best 5,109 yards in 2019 while adding 33 TDs. Still, his decision-making can be questionable at times, as evidenced by his league-high 30 INTs also in 2019.
Hill represents more of an unknown under center. He totaled 928 passing yards, 4 TDs and 2 INTs for the Saints last year, which are fine numbers for a spot starter but nothing that will give him an edge in this QB battle.
Both quarterbacks have something to prove and they could elevate each other's play as they hope to take over in New Orleans this season.
