Royals Sign Veteran Starting Pitcher Away From Rays

The Kansas City Royals are rarely huge players in free agency but they did make a signing on Tuesday night, poaching a veteran pitcher from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Yarbrough's best season was probably his rookie year in 2018 when he went 16-6 with a 3.91 ERA over 147 1/3 innings. The lefty often pitched in a hybrid role for the Rays, alternating between starting and relieving as needed. That may have taken a toll on his arm, however, as he went just 12-15 with a 4.90 ERA over the last two seasons combined.
Yarbrough's versatility and ability to soak up innings will be valuable for a Kansas City team that desperately needs quality innings after finishing last in the AL Central at 65-97 last year. He'll also bring veteran leadership and playoff experience to a team where both are currently in short supply.
