Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi has struggled with injuries to start the 2021 campaign. He kicked off the season on the injured list after sustaining a strained right oblique in Spring Training. Then he suffered a left hamstring strain at the beginning of the month that landed him on the 10-day IL again.

Mondesi has been a bright spot since returning to the lineup. But the injury bug may not be gone just yet.

The Royals slugger was forced to leave Sunday's game in the seventh inning with side discomfort. Manager Mike Matheny said the shortstop "felt a little something," which is never an encouraging sign. Mondesi's status is up in the air right now, though it's not hard to see a couple of off days or even another IL stint in his future.

Mondesi immediately brought a pop back to Kansas City's lineup after returning on June 16. He recorded 4 hits across 11 at bats, htting two doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI. One of his dingers was a 464-foot blast, the longest of his career.

The Royals will miss Mondesi's game-changing talents if he is forced to miss some time. They currently own a 32-38 record, good for third in the AL West, 10.0 games back of first place.
