The Houston Rockets have managed to quickly assemble an exciting young core after being forced into a rebuild. One of the key pieces of this roster is guard Kevin Porter Jr., who's turned heads during his two seasons in Houston.

Following a successful 2021-22 campaign, the Rockets are signing KPJ to a lucrative extension, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Porter is inking a four-year, $82.5 million deal to stay with the Rockets, per Wojnarowski. Monday was the deadline for 2019 draft picks to sign extensions with their teams, so this allows both Houston and Porter to move forward as a part of each other's long-term plans.

KPJ landing this kind of deal is quite the turnaround from the start of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He struggled to carve out a significant role for the Cavs, and various off-court incidents made Cleveland eager to ship him out during the 2020-21 campaign. He showcased his potential immediately for the Rockets, averaging 16.6 points, 6.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 26 games for them following his trade.

Porter followed that up with another strong season in 2021-22. He started in each of his 61 games played for Houston, averaging 15.6 PPG, 6.2 APG and 4.4 RPG. Most exciting was the step forward the PG took as a shooter, going from 31.1% in his first season with Houston to 37.5% on 6.8 attempts a night.

Porter's extension now confirms his spot alongside Jalen Green in the Rockets' backcourt for years to come. KPJ's playmaking, coupled with Green's natural scoring ability, gives Houston plenty of reason to be excited heading into the 2022-23 campaign.

Houston checks in at +50000 to win the championships this season, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NBA Finals odds.
