As the 2021 MLB season continues, the Cincinnati Reds are trying to gain ground in the NL Central. At 29-31, they trail the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers by 5.0 games for the divisional crown. Fortunately for Cincinnati, reinforcements could be on the way soon in the form of one of their veteran batters.
Injuries have limited infielder Mike Moustakas to just 28 games with the Reds this season. He was most recently placed on the 10-day injured list on May 20 with a right heel contusion. However, The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans reported on Friday that Moustakas "has been running and taking infield," which bodes well for a prompt return.
Mike Moustakas Injury Update
The original hope from the Reds was that Moustakas would be back closer to the 10-day minimum, but things obviously haven't worked out that way. Still, it's encouraging to hear that the three-time All-Star is one step closer to an eventual rehab assignment.
Aside from his injuries, Moustakas has been playing decent in his second campaign with the Reds. So far, he has 5 doubles and 4 home runs on 21 hits, tallying 13 RBI along the way. His .241/.337/.437 slash line is a slight upgrade from his one in 2020 (.230/.331/.468), but it's still far from how he performed in his prime. Nevertheless, Moustakas is still an important part of Cincinnati's roster and the organization likely can't wait until he's back on the field for an actual game.
Even if Moustakas moves the needle by a little bit, the Reds could use him in their NL Central title chase. They currently have the second-worst odds to win their division at +1200, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Those odds have the Reds trailing the Brewers (+120), St. Louis Cardinals (+175) and Cubs (+350).
