There was a noticeable dip in starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi's fastball velocity on Wednesday night, and it left fans wondering if something more was going on. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that the 32-year-old is dealing with hip tightness, but he won't have to miss a turn in the rotation.

Nathan Eovaldi Injury Update

It's a generally positive update since a stint on the injured list is not being considered at this point. Eovaldi threw 32 four-seam fastballs against the Los Angeles Angels, averaging 94 mph (per Baseball Savant). That was well below his average over his first 10 starts of the year (96.7).

Eovaldi focused on his off-speed pitches to get batters out instead, and he ended up grinding through five scoreless innings. He threw a total of 84 pitches and will now be on extra rest the next time he takes the mound. It seems that the traveling wear and tear of a baseball season has caught up to him.

"As the game went on it got tighter. So I don’t think it’s going to be anything to worry about moving forward. ... No concerns really.”

Eovaldi made his first All-Star game last season and wasted no time getting back into that form in 2022. He has posted a 3-2 record to go along with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 11 starts. The 2008 draft pick has also racked up 67 strikeouts compared to just 10 walks in 63.1 innings pitched.

Boston has started picking up momentum, winning eight of its last 10 games overall. The Red Sox have odds set at +4000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
