The Boston Red Sox are set to take on the Tampa Bay Rays in the America League Division Series, which begins Thursday night. The Red Sox have announced their ALDS roster ahead of the game, however, one surprising player is not on the list.
Right-handed reliever Matt Barnes is one of the players who's been left off of Boston's ALDS roster. The move is pretty surprising after the 31-year-old made his first MLB All-Star game earlier this year and even signed a two-year, $18.75 million extension with the club back in July.

Barnes started the 2021 season on a high note. He was 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 0.89 WHIP heading into the MLB All-Star Break, notching 19 saves along the way as Boston's primary closer.
Unfortunately, he's been far from that player during the second half of the season. Barnes has gone 2-3 in 22 appearances since July 21, tallying an abysmal 6.48 ERA and recording just five saves during that span.
Meanwhile, RHP Hansel Robles has been used more often late in the game compared to Barnes recently. The Dominican Republic native has recorded 16 strikeouts and three saves over his last 15 appearances without allowing a single earned run. If he can keep it up in the postseason, it wouldn't be surprising to see Boston continuing to favor him over Barnes.
The Red Sox will enter their ALDS series with the Rays as the +136 Game 1 underdog while Tampa Bay is favored at -162 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
