Manager Alex Cora stressed that pitcher Garrett Whitlock's hip issue was "nothing serious" on Thursday, but it turns out that isn't the case anymore. The 25-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation and will miss at least three turns through the starting rotation.

Garrett Whitlock Injury Update

It's a major blow considering all signs pointed toward Whitlock being ready to go for his scheduled start on Sunday. Instead, the Red Sox will now be forced to find a replacement. One hasn't been named yet as Cora's decision will be based on how the bullpen is used on Friday and Saturday.

It's worth mentioning that Whitlock did labor through four innings against the Los Angeles Angels in his most recent start, allowing four runs on six hits (71 pitches). The hip issue dates all the way back to June 1, though, when Cora first noticed Whitlock favoring his hip against the Cincinnati Reds.

Whitlock has been a reliable hurler for Boston this season, posting a 2-1 record to go along with a 3.51 ERA and 1.13 WHIP across 13 appearances (9 starts). He has also racked up 49 strikeouts compared to just 11 walks and filled in the gap that existed at the back end of the rotation nicely.

The Red Sox have now won eight of their last nine games as they look to strengthen their hold on the American League's final Wild Card spot. Boston has odds set at +4000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
